    Decider Skills

The HUB are holding a presentation for parents and guardians on ‘Decider Skills’. Decider Skills are 12 easy to digest life skills that are for everyone. Based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and used in both primary and secondary care in Guernsey Mental Health Services, these skills are highly effective. The brilliant thing is that you can teach any child the skills and be proactive about their mental health. By adopting the skills as a household, you’ll create a common language to help prevent, defuse and discuss emotions escalating.

This will place at the Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts on Monday 13 March 2017 at 7.00pm.

The information shared at these evenings is invaluable to anyone with responsibility for a child and attendees at past events have really appreciated the opportunity to chat informally with the experts on a one to one basis after the presentations.

  • The WriteStuff Competition

    Tue 10 Jan 2017

A Writing Competition for students kindly sponsored by Julius Baer

The WriteStuff Competition is now live and will run through to Friday 24 March. The Competition has become an integral part of the Guernsey Literary Festival and a chance for aspiring young authors to see their work published and illustrated.

The WriteStuff Competition is kindly sponsored by Julius Baer and prizes will be awarded during the Festival. All participants whose stories are published will receive a certificate and a WriteStuff pencil. The full details of the fantastic prizes for our nine winners can be found on the website.

A 300-word writing challenge, the categories cover Primary (Years 3/4/5/6) Intermediate (Years 7/8/9) and Secondary (Year 10 plus) providing an opportunity for pupils to compose a short story.

Winners’ stories will be professionally illustrated by Rob Sweeney and published in full in May on the Write Stuff website but with a small snippet loaded within a matter of days after submission.

The Literary Festival has been delighted at the year on year rise in both the number of entries and the quality of submissions. It would be fantastic for the Festival and for schools to see a record number of entries for the 2017 Festival, with all schools in the Bailiwick of Guernsey represented.

We very much hope that your children, whatever their age, will take part. You can find out all the information you need, including this year’s challenge, on our website: www.writestuff.gg

  • Mind Sports workshop in half-term break - Year 4-6

    Mon 10 Oct 2016

There is something special about seeing children enjoying themselves playing board games which are both fun and educational.  The conversation which is developed as they discuss their strategies is a skill which is being lost these days as many children spend their entertainment time using electronic games or sitting in front of the television.

The Mind Games Workshops will be returning to Guernsey for the 15th successive year this month during half-term.  Instructors teach children within the workshops how to play educational games, before running the Guernsey Junior Mind Sports Olympiad to find the individual Primary Champion, Secondary Champion and also the best team from both Primary Schools and Secondary Schools.  The emphasis is on having fun but on the Friday the learning has a competitive edge.  The workshops are inclusive and as such, open to all children aged 8 to 15 years.

This event is for all children who like to learn and play games.

If you are interested in your child taking part in the annual Mind Games workshop which is being held at Grammar School from 24th-28th October, come and grab a form from the school office.

  • Stuck for ideas of things to do with the children this summer?

Keeping your children entertained during the summer holidays

Knowing how to keep your children entertained over the six week summer break can potentially be a daunting experience. Attached is a summer holiday planner, specifically designed for Guernsey which aims to keep costs down to a minimum. The aim of the planner is to try and keep everyone happy and take some of the stress out of it.

    Here are some top tips:

    1. Plan out activities and agree some rules for the holidays. As soon as the holidays begin, spend some time planning out with your children which activities you can do to make the holidays more fun. This will ensure that some routines are stuck to. Communicating clear expectations for behaviour (e.g. sharing, using kind words, using kind hands and feet) will ensure your children do not become out of control.
    2. Don’t feel under pressure to keep your children entertained throughout the whole day. Try not to set standards so high that they are impossible to meet. It’s ok for your children not to be entertained all of the time- don’t beat yourself up about it. The more calm and relaxed you are, the more fun you will have as a family.
    3. With all the excitement of activities- don’t forget to eat! This sounds obvious but children’s’ moods are particularly affected by blood sugar levels. Children can get frustrated, grumpy or lethargic very quickly if they haven’t eaten properly. This can lead to poor behaviour and irritability. School holidays may mean you want to treat your children more with sweets and junk food but remember sticking to routines for mealtimes and having healthy snacks will make your life easier.
    4. Remember to socialise. It is vital for you and your child/ren to spend time with friends or relatives. Inviting others round or agreeing to meet up with friends will change the dynamics and provide a welcome break.
    5. Try not to forget about routines and chores. Having your child/ren at home all day, it is easy to forget about daily routines. There will still be jobs that need doing around the house and keeping up to date with them will help you to feel in control. It is even better if you can get the kids involved by setting them small tasks to complete and making it fun.
    6. Do something out of the ordinary. Create a campsite in your garden, paint a wall, get games out you’ve not used for a while. The novelty of doing something different (no matter how small) can really uplift moods and can be a welcome distraction when children are becoming restless or bored.

Most importantly of all…have fun! It’s easy to forget how entertaining children can be and how much enjoyment you can have together. Make some magic memories and moments together.
